Back when we first started ceramics classes, we were told to write our names on the bottom of the leather hard pieces to keep track of ownership in the studio. As it turns out, writing an “S” in hardish clay is exceedingly difficult, it looked more like a lightning bolt.
Graham and I are perfectionists and did not like the look of our messy maker’s mark. It did not take long before we decided to get a stamp made for our maker’s mark to be tidy every time. But what should our maker’s mark be?
The name GLASS comes from an acronym of all our names. It seemed quite fitting as glass (silica) is the main ingredient in most glazes. And thus, GLASS Ceramics was born, albeit in the shape of a stamp only.
Now if we had named our youngest Robert, we would’ve come to close to being called GRASS 🙂
