That question “Have you ever recreated …”

There is one question I always get asked when I tell people that Graham and I are both potters, “have you guys ever recreated that scene from Ghost?”.

You know the one with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, one of the most memorable love scenes. They turned the innocent art of making pottery into a steamy seduction in the ’90s. Over the past 20 years, it seems to have been nearly impossible not to associate a pottery wheel with Ghost.

I will start by saying a firm “No, we have not” and there are several reasons for that:

  1. Have you seen how small the seat is for wheel throwing? You would need two of them or a piano seat, and we only have one.
  2. Do you know what clay is? It is dirt. There is very little that is sexy about dirt.
  3. Clay is so abrasive and drying. You really want to have clean hands the moment you step away from the wheel. There would be a lot of hand washing and cleaning up before any passion can take over.
  4. Our wheel is in our garage, there is nothing glamorous about our garage. We have our wheel in between our general storage of bikes, esky and bits and bobs. Not exactly conducive to a love scene.
  5. There is no way that I would interrupt Graham when he is throwing. There is no way I would let him near me or the wheel when I am throwing – only if he is fixing some mistake, I have made in frustration. You would have a death wish if you interrupted a potter in the middle of clay wrangling and making a pot.

For the purposes of this blog post, I asked Graham to partake in a recreation of the scene for a single photo like this, but he said no.
